Outcomes of inferior turbinate infracture for congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction

Author: Gaurav Garg
ePoster Number: 230

Purpose

Efficacy and safety of inferior turbinate infracture in cases of congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction (CNLDO) complicated by the impaction of the inferior turbinate.

Methods

In this consecutive retrospective interventional case series, 69 eyes of 55 patients who underwent lacrimal probing combined with nasal endoscopy-guided inferior turbinate infracture were included. The resolution of cNLDO was the primary outcome measure.

Results

The mean age at presentation was 29.1±15.3 (range, 7 to 80) months. Mean follow-up was 44.9±23.8 (range, 3 to 77) months. In the group of inferior turbinate infracture results were gratifying with the resolution of CNLDO in 90.3% (149). 6 patients were diagnosed with secondary atonic sac. 3 patients underwent dacryocystorhinostomy, 1 patient required repeat re-probing and inferior turbinate infracture and 1 patient developed a lacrimal abscess.

Conclusion

Nasal endoscopy-guided inferior turbinate infracture is highly effective and safe, with an impressive resolution of CNLDO.
