Purpose
To report the surgical outcome using oral mucosa transplant for repair of fornix inferior conjunctival scar secondary to chemical burn and prolonged prosthesis use.
Methods
Review of records from patients admitted to University hospital of Southern Denmark, Vejle in need of reconstructive surgery during the period 2023-2025. Oral mucosa transplant was used in 3 patients. One patient had conjunctival scaring in the right eye after chemical burn with hot aluminium while 2 patients had conjunctival shrinkage after prolonged prosthesis use. Surgery was performed under general anesthesia assisted by an ENT doctor harvesting oral mucosa. The oral mucosa was put in place and sutured by Vicryl 5.0 after incision of the the cikatricial fornices.
Results
Prior to surgery, all patients had tearing of the affected eye, instability of the prosthesis in 2 patients and double vision as well as photophobia for the for the patient having binocular vision.
After surgery tearing was subjectively less for all patients. For the patient having binocular vision the double vision did no longer exist and photophobia was less. For this patient it was possible to perform a successful cornea transplant improving his vision. The outcome for the 2 patients previously having prosthesis was a much better fit and stability of the new prosthesis. Wound healing of the oral mucosa at the place of harvest was excellent.
Conclusion
Repair by oral mucosa for conjunctival scar tissue seems feasible and with good results. However, larger studies are needed to fully a describe the surgical potential.
