Purpose
Ultrasound devices are often used in orbital surgeries to debulk unencapsulated and infiltrative tumors. At our facility, we perform these surgeries with Sonopet (Stryker) or CUSA (Integra) ultrasonic aspirators. These devices are based on ultrasonic jets associated with suction and irrigation. Ophthalmologists are very familiar with this type of device when performing cataract surgery. The purpose of this video was to evaluate whether a phaco tip was able to debulk orbital lymphoma.
Methods
Surgical video demonstrating a biopsy and debulking of an orbital lymphoma…with a phaco tip. The most powerful settings (power, suction, irrigation) were selected.
Results
the Phaco Point Needle is used in cataract surgery and should only be used during cataract surgery. It was not powerful enough to reduce orbital lymphoma like Sonopet and Cusa do.
Conclusion
Orbital tumours debulking should be performed with dedicated ultrasonic aspirators
