Purpose
To evaluate the incidence of amblyopia and strabismus in patients with congenital ptosis and to compare it to the healthy population.
Methods
Medical records of 116 patients diagnosed with congenital ptosis were retrospectively analysed, especially taken into consideration was the incidence of amblyopia and/or strabismus.
The group consisted of 72 boys and 42 girls, aged between 1,5 months and 17 years and 7 months (mean age was 6 years and 7 months).
Ptosis was diagnosed in the right eye in 47 cases, left in 45 and in 24 cases both eyes were affected.
Ptosis associated with congenital syndromes was present in 23 (19,83%) patients – Marcus Gunn jaw-winking syndrome in 6 of them.
Results
Amblyopia was diagnosed in 48 (41,38%) of all patients, compared to 3,6% in general population. Strabismus was present in 27 (23,28%) of all patients, compared to incidence of 1,3%-5,7% found in general population. Amblyopia and strabismus were noted in 12 (10,34%) of all cases.
Conclusion
Patients with ptosis are at higher risk of developing subsequent amblyopia and/or strabismus than the healthy population. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent such complications or help with faster visual rehabilitation.
