Purpose

To report a case of eyelid dirofilariasis mimicking orbital cellulitis

Methods

A case report

Results

A 62 year old male, with no medical history, consulting for a rapid onset of the upper right eyelid swelling. He was diagnosed with preseptal orbital cellulitis. Examination showed palpable mass in the inner third of the upper eyelid of the right eye (RE) involving the skin, measuring 0.7 cm, and firm in consistency. A trial of antibiotics was given with temporary reduction in the swelling but a consecutive flare up was noted. An excision biopsy of the palpable mass with histopathological examination conclude to the diagnosis of eyelid dirofilariasis. No recurrence of the patient symptoms was noticed on follow up

Conclusion

Dirofilariasis is a common zoonotic infection among wild animals but rarely infects human beings with ocular involvement. Dirofilariasis should be considered as a differential diagnosis of orbital cellulitis
