Purpose
Multiple surgical techniques have been described for the management of lower eyelid entropion. The project is aimed at reviewing current first line treatment in the management of lower eyelid entropion in the form of everting lid sutures (ELS) and its role in delaying or negating the need for any other further surgical management at NHS Tayside.
Methods
Over a period of 20 months (01/10/2019 to 22/06/2021) data was collected retrospectively from electronic patient records, minor operative clinic lists and clinical portal. Patients who had a diagnosis of entropion and symptomatic patients requiring intervention were included and results inputted into an excel spreadsheet for analysis.
Results
During the data collection period a total of 53 patients were identified and included in the analysis. This included 32 males and 21 females with an average age of 79.9years (range 56-92). Of those patients 33 patients had primary everting lid sutures and required no further intervention at 3 years, 14 required further surgical correction, one patient had everting lid sutures performed twice and 5 patients had a primary surgical correction due to degree of id laxity at presentation.
Conclusion
The results above demonstrates the value of performing everting lid sutures as first line treatment for lower eyelid entropion, as 62% of patients did not require any further more invasive surgical correction following everting lid sutures.
