Purpose

Eyelid contour assessment is a critical aspect of oculoplastics for diagnosis, planning, and evaluation of interventions. Traditional methods are subjective and lack consistency. Moreover, the variations in eyelid contour based on gender, ethnicity, and aging are poorly defined and subjective. Until now, objectively mapping the upper eyelid contour has been both time-consuming and resource intensive. This study aims to quantify objective differences in eyelid contour among different ethnicities and genders, and to examine the effect of aging.

Methods

Trucurve, a custom graphical tool described previously, was used to graph a quadratic line of best fit to the upper eyelid (y= ax2+b+c). Differences in the steepness of the parabola (a), the axis of symmetry (-b/2a) and height (c) were compared.

Results

Fifty healthy subjects (100 eyes; 23 males and 27 females; mean age 29.4 ±8.7) were analysed. Steepness and height were significantly different between ethnicities (p0.05).

Conclusion

A parabolic quadratic polynomial effectively provides an objective measure of eyelid curvature, which varies with sex, age, and ethnicity. Further research is necessary to establish normative eyelid curvature, as well as to evaluate the impact of pathology and surgical interventions.
