Purpose

We examined efficacy of direct intralesional Doxycycline hyclate injection on cosmetic appearance of malar oedema and lower eyelid festoons

Methods

In 22 patients with malar oedema and/or lower eyelid festoons Doxycycline hyclate was injected directly intralesionaly.
Clinical presentation was evaluated and graded prior to injection as mild/moderate/heavy independently by two ophthalmologists.
Clinical findings were reevaluated (photodocumentation and questionairre) after 1,4,12 and 30 weeks post application.

Results

In 18 of 22 patients cosmetically significant result was acchieved.
16 of 22 were motivated to repeat the treatment if recommended.
59% of patients complained of mild pain and/or burrning sensation and 22% of bruising and erythema.
In 6 patients treatment was repeated after >30 weeks.

Conclusion

Our results suggest that direct intralesional injection of Doxycycline hyclate for malar oedema and lower eyelid festoons is effective and suggested treatment option either alone or prior to lower blepharoplasty.
