Reflections on the 41st ESOPRS Annual Meeting in Naples
Dear colleagues and friends,
We want to thank everyone who joined us in Naples last month for the 41st ESOPRS Annual Meeting! With a whopping 800 participants in the general meeting and 560 in the Pre-meeting course, this year’s event was one of ESOPRS’ largest gatherings ever. The ESOPRS Committee is grateful for the great efforts made by local organizers Diego Strianese, Adriana Iuliano, Fausto Trance, Giovanni Uccello, Vittoria Lanni and Mariapaola Laezza, who kindly hosted the 41st Annual Meeting in Naples. The Meeting was very well supported by Sistema Congressi S.r.l., with special thanks to Roberta Maione.
What made this year’s meeting special was the great mix of topics, covering both cosmetic and functional oculoplastic surgery. Our keynote speakers were top-notch: Dr. Richard Allen shared insights into eyelid and orbital malignancies, Dr. Peerooz Saeed talked about targeted therapy for orbital vascular lesions, Dr. Michael Kazim made a case for new metrics in evaluating TED therapies, and Dr. Santiago Ortiz Perez discussed the role of social media in oculoplastic surgery today. This year’s Mustardé lecture, presented by Prof. Ilse Mombaerts, focused on pupil monitoring during orbital surgery. For the first time, we introduced the Dr. John Wright Lecture, presented remotely by Dr. Jack Rootman, which added an exciting dimension to our meeting.
After long preparations interrupted by Covid, the inaugural EBO-ESOPRS exam was held in Naples. During the meeting, the senior examiner Prof Brigita Drnovšek presented diplomas to the successful candidates, of whom we are very proud. The Committee is very grateful to the Exam Board (Michele Beaconsfield, Brigita Drnovšek and Andrea Papp) as well as to all the examiners for their tremendous efforts to get this exam up and running, and who are already preparing for next year in Rotterdam. All details regarding this can be found on www.esoprs.eu
Just as a reminder, the ESOPRS Textbook – which can now serve as useful reference for studying for the ESOPRS-EBO exam – will become available for purchase in late November 2023.
The Gala Dinner at Bagno Elena was a fantastic evening filled with stunning views, great food, music, and wine, reminding us of the strong bonds within our ESOPRS family.
With memories of Naples fresh in our minds, we look forward with excitement to next year’s meetings:
