Purpose
EUGOGO recommends that all patients with moderate-severe thyroid eye disease (TED) is managed in a joint thyroid multi-disciplinary team (MDT) clinic. We evaluate the experience of patients attending this clinic at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital.
Methods
A 13-point paper questionnaire was devised and offered to patients attending the MDT clinic prior to their appointment time at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital. These were distributed at the monthly clinic from March to November 2024. Responses were collected by the clinic nurse and then collected and tabulated.
Results
Twenty-two responses were received; 12 females and 10 males. The age range was from 19 to 89 years with an average age of 48 years. All patients except one had attended the clinic before. 73% of patients attended the clinic up to 5 times per year and 64% found that the gap between appointment times was acceptable. 73% of patients required medical treatment and 50% patients required surgery. 100% of patients received their treatment on time. 68% of patients reported that they understood their disease more with the MDT approach and felt their care was better co-ordinated.
Conclusion
Our centre is able to offer our patients a monthly thyroid eye disease MDT clinic which is not available to all patients in the UK. Our results show high satisfaction rates from our patients and better understanding of their condition and management. This results in more motivated and well-informed patients which consequently results in better outcomes. We recommend that all patients with thyroid eye disease should be managed in such clinics as there are benefits for both provider and patient.
