Purpose
Introduction: the traditional practice and teaching of the oculoplastic and orbital surgery focused on the anatomical and pathological basis without consideration of the physical properties of the tissue namely elasticity and plasticity. Elasticity is the ability of material or tissue to undergo chance in shape that is completely reversible, while plasticity refers to the ability of a solid material or tissue to undergo permanent deformation which is a non-reversible by itself. These two properties are found to correlate well with presence of elastic fibers and collagen retrospectively.
Methods
I have collected many clinical situations that shows the applications of these two physical properties in different situations of the orbital diseases.
Results
the appearance of these two physical phenomena correlates well with the distribution of elastic tissue in different ages and in different disease states. It also explains the different conditions and presentations in thyroid associated orbitopathy, vascular abnormalities, inflammation of the orbit and orbital trauma. Also, it has tremendous implications for the selections of the suitable approach to esthetic procedures of eyelids.
Conclusion
paying attention to these physical phenomena not only explain the behavior of the ocular adnexa in many disease states but also help the junior colleagues in the specialty to early detect and understand many disease situations and choose the right interventional procedures in different conditions.
