Purpose
Surgical simulation can help with cementing the anatomy, practicing suturing and improving understanding of the principles behind the surgery. In a quest to find a low cost, low tech model as an adjuvant to surgery simulation we would like to present ‘Gloria’ . We describe the making of the model, illustrate the techniques that could be demonstrated. We present the utility and limitation of this model.
Methods
We give the instructions to make your own ‘Gloria’ utilising the characteristics of different fabrics. Gloria is made with a polystyrene ball covered in different layers of fabric. We illustrate some of the principles and techniques that can be demonstrated. A questionnaire was completed by 10 ophthalmologists in training whom compared the use of Gloria to pigs heads.
Results
We estimate the cost of production of one model at £5. We provide the instruction for you to make your own model. Gloria performed favorably when comparing to pig heads .
Conclusion
Simulation has an important role of teaching surgical skills. Gloria is easily transported and with no restriction of use in a clinical environment. We believe that Gloria may be a useful adjuvant to training. We urge you get sewing, improve the design and produce your own!.
