To review current applications of artificial intelligence (AI) in ophthalmology, specifically focusing on clinical care, ophthalmic research, and medical education.
Methods
A literature search was conducted on PubMed with the following search terms: artificial intelligence, deep learning, ophthalmology, ocular surgery, clinic, research, and education.
Results
In clinical settings, AI has been shown to be effective in the detection and grading of various ophthalmic conditions including diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, and thyroid eye disease. AI has also been used for scribing, prediction of glaucoma progression, automated imaging interpretation, and triaging referrals.
In research settings, AI has been used in large-scale image analysis, automated image segmentation, disease phenotyping, and predictive modeling.
In educational settings, AI has been incorporated in surgical simulation feedback, image-based teaching platforms, adaptive learning systems, and various educational tools.
Conclusion
AI is increasingly used throughout the field of ophthalmology across a variety of clinical, research, and medical education settings. Ongoing challenges may include ethical considerations, privacy of data, and responsible integration of AI into clinical practice and training environments.
