Surgical sponges used in Oculoplastic surgery are typically square-shaped. We evaluated the distribution of blood on sponges follow Oculoplastic surgery. We hope to re-evaluate the ideal shape of surgical sponges. If we presume that blood is randomly distributed on sponges, this blood distribution will allow us to calculate the mathematical constant pi. Although pi has been well established, this is the first determination of pi in the Oculoplastic literature.
Methods
Following Oculoplastic surgery, we analyzed the blood distribution on square-shaped surgical sponges. A central circle was inscribed on each sponge and we calculate the quantity of blood within and outside of the boundaries of this circle.
Results
Analysis of blood distribution on the surgical sponges demonstrates that blood is primarily located on the central region of the sponges.We calculate pi to be 3.8
Conclusion
We demonstrated that blood tends to be centrally located on square surgical sponges during Oculoplastic surgery. We propose a redesign of the shape of these sponges. Round-shaped sponges may offer some ecological advantages. We also calculate pi to be 3.8. We conclude that this is an inaccurate method for calculating pi.
