Purpose
To evaluate the clinical outcomes of initial conservative management in pediatric patients with chalazion
Methods
A total of 91 cases conservatively managed with warm massage and antibiotic ointment between January 2020 and December 2022 were retrospectively reviewed. All patients were divided into three groups according to the age; Group I (≤2 year), Group II (3-6 years), Group III (7-15 years). We compared number of lesion, location and size, resolution time and complications between three groups.
Results
In total cases, spontaneous resolution was achieved in 78 of 91(85.7%) cases after conservative treatment. The mean resolution time was 2.34±1.84 months. The number of lesion, location, size, resolution time, and complication were not significantly different between three groups The resolution rates were significantly different between three groups (p=0.022) ; 29 of 30 cases (96.7%) in Group I, 33 of 38 cases (89.8%) in Group II, and 16 of 23 cases (69.6%) in Group III. Eyelid scar that is most common complication was presented in 19 of 91 cases (20.8%)
Conclusion
Most of the chalazion in pediatric patients could be successfully managed with conservative treatment alone. However, resolution rate was decreased according to the age. Especially, conservative treatment was more effective in under 7 years of age.
