Association Between Social Media Use and Interest in Periocular Aesthetic Surgery Among High School Students

Purpose
To examine the association between social media use and interest in periocular aesthetic surgery, and consideration of cosmetic procedures prompted by social media, among high school students.
Methods
We analyzed a cross-sectional questionnaire survey from three high schools. Among 1,735 students coded as female or male, social media use was grouped as <1, 1-<3, 3-=5 hours/day. Outcomes were interest in periocular aesthetic surgery within 5 years and consideration of cosmetic procedures after viewing social media posts or advertisements. Ordinal logistic regression adjusted for sex, grade, school, exposure to others’ images, reduced appearance satisfaction after viewing social media, awareness of acquaintances with cosmetic surgery, and current appearance dissatisfaction.
Results
Female students more often reported 3 or more hours/day of social media use (45.2% vs 29.8%), any interest in periocular aesthetic surgery (36.6% vs 6.5%), and social-media-prompted consideration (21.9% vs 3.6%) (all P<0.001). Compared with =5 hours/day was associated with greater interest in periocular aesthetic surgery (aOR 2.47, 95% CI 1.60-3.81) and social-media-prompted consideration (aOR 1.94, 95% CI 1.22-3.07). Exposure to others’ images, reduced appearance satisfaction, appearance dissatisfaction, and awareness of acquaintances with cosmetic surgery were also associated with both outcomes.
Conclusion
Longer social media use was associated with stronger interest in periocular aesthetic surgery and social-media-prompted consideration of cosmetic procedures. These findings suggest that social media exposure may be relevant to adolescent interest in periocular aesthetic surgery.
