Estoril / Cascais

Estoril is a coastal town in Portugal, located just west of Lisbon, along the Portuguese Riviera. It is known for its elegant atmosphere, mild climate, and scenic seaside promenade that connects Estoril to Cascais. The town is famous for the Estoril Casino, one of the largest casinos in Europe, as well as beautiful beaches, golf courses, and luxury hotels. Estoril also has a rich history linked to European royalty and exiled figures during World War II, which gives it a distinctive cultural and historical charm.

By Air

Lisboa International Airport, 7 km from the city centre, has daily flights to and from the major cities in Europe and the world. The Portuguese airline TAP – Air Portugal, as well as major international airlines, fly to and from Lisboa.

By Air

Arriving in Lisboa by road is a pleasant experience, as the visitor can enjoy the beautiful countryside along the way. The city has good road accesses and the most frequently used routes are: the A1 motorway, the 25th April Bridge, the new Vasco da Gama Bridge, and the CREL, the outer ring-road for the Lisboa region.

By Rail

Scores of national and international trains arrive in Lisboa every day. In addition to Santa Apolónia terminal station, the city now has the new Gare do Oriente, which opened in 1998 adjacent to the Parque das Nações. Both stations have direct bus or underground connections to the city center.


How to get to Estoril / Cascais

By Train

(the easiest and most popular option)

Take the train from Cais do Sodré station in Lisbon.
Line: Cascais Line.
Get off at Estoril station.
Travel time: about 25–30 minutes.
Trains run frequently

By Car

Take the A5 motorway (Lisbon–Cascais).
Exit toward Estoril.
Travel time: about 20–30 minutes,
depending on traffic.

By Bus

There are buses operated by Carris Metropolitana and other companies from Lisbon.
This is an option, but it is generally slower than the train.

Tip: for visitors, the train is the best option fast, affordable, and with sea views.


Visa Information

Portugal is a Member State of the European Union. The entry formalities vary according to the country of origin. Some countries need a visa to enter Portugal. Participants are strongly encouraged to contact their local embassy or consulate regarding their Visa requirements. It is important to start the process at least 3 months prior to the ESOPRS 2026 Congress.

Individuals requiring an official Letter of Invitation in order to obtain a Visa and authorization to attend the ESOPRS Congress will need to contact the ESOPRS Registration team at: esoprs26@veranatura.pt

The Letter of Invitation should be considered as an official invitation to facilitate the processing of Visas and/or related documents needed for single entry to be able to attend the Congress. All delegates are responsible for the payment of all fees and expenses related to your participation at the Congress and Visa application, as well as any necessary insurance for health and travel. This invitation does NOT include any financial aid such as waived fee, financial support or accommodation. Any misuse of the document will be subject to legal action.

Please apply for the Visa within reasonable time (minimum three months ahead of the planned travel).

The average air temperature in Estoril in September ranges from 25 °C (77 °F) during the day to 17 °C (62.6°F) at night.

Language

The official language of the Congress is English. No translation service will be provided.

Estoril Casino – the largest casino in Europe, with gardens, exhibitions, and shows.
Estoril beaches – Tamariz Beach is the most famous and is located right next to the train station.
Estoril–Cascais Seaside Promenade – a beautiful walk along the coast, perfect at sunset.
Casino Gardens – ideal for relaxing.

To visit in Cascais

Cascais Historic Centre – charming streets, shops, and restaurants.
Boca do Inferno – a dramatic rocky formation by the sea.
Praia da Rainha (Queen’s Beach) – small, central, and very picturesque.
Cascais Marina – lively area with cafés and sea views.
Condes de Castro Guimarães Museum – a palace and museum in a stunning setting.
Santa Marta Lighthouse – a lighthouse museum and historic area.

Surroundings (worth visiting if you have time)

Sintra–Cascais Natural Park – nature, cliffs, and hiking trails.
Guincho Beach – a wild beach, great for surfing and dramatic landscapes.
Cabo da Roca – the westernmost point of mainland Europe.

Free entry at Estoril | Cascais Museums

Guests staying at hotels or other accommodations in the municipality of Cascais, including Estoril, are entitled to a voucher that grants free admission to 15 museums that are part of the Bairro dos Museus (Museum Quarter).

This is a voucher that is valid for 48 hours from the time of issue.
