Purpose

After enucleation, if the fornix disappears due to sac contraction of any cause, the patient cannot wear a prosthesis, thereby suffering significant social and societal disadvantages. We would like to present the effective method of conjunctival sac enlargement with a device invented by István Csapody (Csapody plasty, Csapody device).

Methods

In a 51-year-old female patient several eyelid reconstructions and free skin grafting were performed due to a car accident. After unsuccessful pars plana vitrectomy due to retinal detachment, enucleation was performed with rapid construction of the conjunctival sac in another institute. Finally, the conjunctival sac completely disappeared along with the lower eyelid, only a small recognizable part of the upper eyelid remained. 80% of the eyelashes were lost as a result of previous unsuccessful reconstructive surgeries.

Results

In the poster, we will present the reconstruction step by step, which consisted of a conventional Csapody plasty and lower eyelid formation, followed by a lower eyelid tightening surgery performed in a second session after a month. Each step is explained in detail, with plenty of photos.

Conclusion

Csapody plasty is a safe and effective solution for enlarging a contracted conjunctival sac.
