Multidisciplinary Innovation: Oculoplastic Contributions to Transorbital Skull Base Surgery- Early Single-Centre Experience Highlighting the Oculoplastic Surgeon’s Role

Purpose

The transorbital approach (TOA) to skull base surgery is a minimally invasive technique providing direct access to anterior and middle cranial fossa lesions while minimizing brain retraction. This abstract highlights the critical role of the oculoplastic surgeon in a multidisciplinary team, optimizing orbital exposure, preserving eyelid and periorbital function, and enhancing outcomes based on our initial experience.


Methods

We report our single-centre experience with TOA in two patients, detailing collaborative preoperative planning, intraoperative oculoplastic techniques, and postoperative care. Key contributions included orbital soft tissue management, eyelid retraction, and incision planning to maximize exposure while minimizing morbidity.


Results

Multidisciplinary collaboration enabled safe and effective lesion access in both patients. No major orbital or eyelid complications occurred, and both demonstrated satisfactory functional and cosmetic outcomes. Early mobilization and shorter hospital stays reflected the benefits of coordinated team-based planning.


Conclusion

Our early experience demonstrates that oculoplastic expertise is pivotal in TOA skull base surgery. Multidisciplinary collaboration with neurosurgery and ENT ensures safe orbital access and optimal patient outcomes, providing a model for future minimally invasive skull base procedures.
