Orbital nodular fasciitis, two cases and review of the literature

Purpose
Nodular fasciitis is a benign myofibroblastic proliferative fast growing solitary lesion usually confined to subcutaneous or superficial tissues, but as arising from mesenchymal cells it can occur at varying depths. It can simulate other more common benign and malign neoplasms.
Methods
We present two cases of rapidly growing anterior orbital mass in previously healthy young adults. History, clinical presentation and radiological features are described.
Results
Nodular fasciitis accounts for less than 1% of orbital lesions and it is clinically, radiologically and histopathologically difficult to distinguish from malignant lesions. Excision of the lesion is considered curative.
Conclusion
Excisional biopsy with immunohistochemistry is preferred modality to rule out malignancy. Biopsy can be supplemented with molecular cytogenetic analysis or new generation sequencing for improvement in understanding its pathogenesis.
