Purpose

To call for standardization of the vascular lesions of the orbit using classification of the International Society for the Study of Vascular Anomalies (ISSVA).

Methods

Study of clinical, radiologic, peroperative and pathologic characteristics in patients with orbital vascular lesions treated in a third-centre for orbit surgery.

Results

110 patients with at least one vascular lesion of the orbit have been treated in our centre between 2020 and 2026. Clinical, radiologic, peroperative and pathologic characteristics are described and ISSVA classification is used for standardization of the results.

Conclusion

Even though ISSVA is wildly used in other specialties, orbit surgeons can be reluctant to give up previous terminology. In particular, “cavernous hemangioma” used to reflect a direct picture of the lesion to expect during surgery. Nevertheless, “cavernous” is a morphologic term of the pathology that is not correlated neither to the pathologic type nor to the dissectability of the lesion during surgery. We urge orbit specialists to adopt ISSVA classification to standardize data and to improve the treatment of these lesions.
