Purpose

We describe the use of plastic skulls and duct tape to stimulate peri-ocular periosteum. Duct tape applied to the lateral orbital rim provides a good simulation of periosteum. We find this inexpensive method effective for teaching residents the placement of sutures in the lateral tarsal strip technique. In a similar vein, this technique is useful for teaching of dissection in the context of sub-periosteal orbital abcess. As an added visual aid, mayonnaise may be placed underneath the duct tape to simulate successful exposure of the orbital abscess.
