Purpose

Deep lateral orbital decompression (dLWD) is the basis of surgical treatment for thyroid eye disease and the procedure of choice for optic neuropathy. Bone removal close to the maximum, up to the exposure of the dura mater, is accompanied by the most pronounced unloading in the posterior orbit


Methods

When performing 500 dLWD were identified cases of the dura mater exposure. A bone tissue sample that was thinned by Sonopet and directly adjacent to the dura mater was removed. The native sample was visualized using the EVO LS10 scanning electron microscope (Zeiss) with secondary electron detector for low vacuum mode VPSE and backscattered electron detector for low vacuum mode BSE.


Results

When the surface of the native bone fragment was visualized, some features of its relief were revealed. From the orbital side, the surface of the bone sample was characterized by the presence of similar grooves with an average distance of 200 μm between them. The surface of the bone sample on the dura side had a smoother relief. The sample itself had a lamellar structure, which was especially noticeable when analyzing the edge of its surface from the side of the dura mater.


Conclusion

When a polished sample slice is visualized, its lamellar and two-leaf structure is shown.
